AWAKENING

Are you dissatisfied and bowed with grief
Because you lack so very many things?
That life has cheated you is your belief
As you fold close your joy's fast-drooping wings.
With earth so filled with wars and pain and hate,
With flood and drouth, with earthquakes, wind, and fire,
What chance is there to rise above such fate;
What is there left to hearten or inspire?

Ungrateful one, be silent and recall
That God is Love, whose goodness is supreme.
God is the only cause—this fact makes all
That is not good an untrue mortal dream.
Awake, give thanks, rejoice! You are God's child,
Whose only path is joyous, undefiled!
