God's Ever-Presence

What if the lightning flashes,
Thunder roars, and all the terrors of the night
Cry out aloud?
They are but so much nothingness,
Mere vapid fury playing on our childish fears:
They do not come from God.

And of this truth we must remind ourselves
When darkness claims to sweep across our thought
And we feel whipped and cowed;
We must stand firm and know that claims of pain,
Or fear, or doubt, or ugly old discouragement
Come not from God.

The sun is always shining,
No matter how appalling, black, or ominous
The cloud;
And so, behind our darkest thoughts
We find the ever-presence, power, and tenderness
Of God.
