Israel and Amalek

[Original article in German]

One of the great blessings which come to the student of Christian Science as he studies the Bible in conjunction with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is an understanding of the Scriptures, that is, an insight into their spiritual signification. However important may be the acquisition and preservation of health through the understanding of Christian Science, even more precious is the moral and spiritual exaltation gained through this teaching. This is, in fact, gaining the kingdom of heaven, which, according to a New Testament parable, is like unto a merchant seeking precious pearls, who, when he had found one of great value, "went and sold all that he had, and bought it."

In our regular study of the Bible we discover many instructive narratives which, interpreted with the spiritual understanding gained in Christian Science, prove helpful to us in daily life.

In the seveteenth chapter of Exodus, for instance, we read about the battle of Israel against Amalek. Joshua was put in command, and Moses purposed to "stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in [his] hand." Farther on it is reported that "when Moses held up his hand, ... Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed."
