Out with negativity, in with love
Not long ago, I read in Mary Baker Eddy’s Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896 this statement about Christ Jesus: “To carry out his holy purpose, he must be oblivious of human self” (p. 162). That caught my attention, and I gave it much thought.
Christian Science teaches that there is a difference between a personal, material sense of self and the real man, made in God’s, Spirit’s, image and likeness, as we read about in the first chapter of Genesis in the Bible. In carrying out his God-given mission of universal salvation from sin, sickness, and death, Jesus proved that man’s true identity is spiritual, not material.
Sounds like a tall order, to become oblivious of one’s own human self! However, our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, also tells us that grand spiritual demands are accomplished by tackling simpler issues one by one: “We must begin, however, with the more simple demonstrations of control, and the sooner we begin the better” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 429). I recently had an experience that I recognized as a simple demonstration toward the larger demand.
