Eye on the world: Defanging extremism

In its editorial “Best defense of free speech: individual dignity,”The Christian Science Monitor explains the importance of respecting each individual and rejecting the lies of extremist thinking. The articles below offer thoughts about how prayer can help.

For the writer of “Religion and the responsibility to love,” extremism has no place in true religion and must be rejected: “When acts of violence or terrorism are committed in the name of religion, people of faith have the opportunity to rise up against them through prayer that embraces mankind in love. It’s so important to see that atrocities are not due to the practice of true religion but to some of the worst elements of human thought, masquerading as religion.”

Prayer—a game changer in times of conflict” recommends, “We might include in our prayers the fact that God, divine Love, is everywhere; that Love is not only a permanent power, but the only true power; that every man, woman, and child is part of God’s family, with the life purpose of uniquely expressing His qualities.”
